It was <strong>June 19th, 1999</strong> &#8211; a date etched into the memories of many a royal watcher, a day that promised, and indeed delivered, a fresh breath of air into the grand tapestry of British royal weddings. We weren't in Westminster Abbey or St. Paul's Cathedral this time; no, Prince Edward, the youngest son of our beloved Queen Elizabeth II, chose the more intimate, yet equally majestic, <strong>St. George's Chapel at Windsor Castle</strong> to marry his beloved <strong>Sophie Rhys-Jones</strong>. And what a choice it was!</p>

Six long, weary years of war had carved lines onto faces and landscapes alike. The air still hung thick with the dust of the Blitz and the scent of austerity. Ration books were a constant companion, dictating the purchase of everything from the morning bacon slice to a new pair of socks. Nights were shrouded in the mandatory blackout, familiar streets transformed into disorienting mazes of shadow, a necessary precaution against the bombers that had claimed over 60,000 civilian lives and shattered countless homes. Anxiety for loved ones serving on distant fronts was a gnawing, ever-present ache. However, passionate locals formed a preservation society and reopened it in 1968, marking the first instance of British Rail privatization. The railway gained fame as the filming location for the 1970 film 'The Railway Children' and its sequel.</p><p>Our visit was on a sunny April afternoon in Howarth, steaming to Oxenhope through Bront&#235; Country's scenic landscapes. We then journeyed back to Keighley, noting its connection to the national rail network and 1950s ambiance. The return to Howarth concluded our nostalgic trip. The railway boasts restored stations and a collection of historic steam locomotives, offering a delightful step back in time and a testament to community dedication.</p><p class="button-wrapper" data-attrs="{&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https://inostalgia.co.uk/transport-history/worth-valley-railway/&quot;,&quot;text&quot;:&quot;Read The Article&quot;,&quot;action&quot;:null,&quot;class&quot;:null}" data-component-name="ButtonCreateButton"><a class="button primary" href="https://inostalgia.co.uk/transport-history/worth-valley-railway/"><span>Read The Article</span></a></p><p></p>

<a href="https://www.coastalcottages.co.uk/inspiration/heritage/the-last-invasion-of-britain-1797/">Coastal Cottages</a></figcaption></figure></div><p>This seemingly insignificant event, often overshadowed by the Norman Conquest of 1066, was the last time a hostile foreign force landed on British soil, a testament to the courage and cunning of the Welsh people who repelled the invaders. The Fishguard Invasion of 1797 is not merely a historical footnote; it symbolises British resilience during a time of widespread fear and uncertainty, boosting morale and demonstrating the strength of local defence against a powerful enemy. This article delves into the historical accounts of this remarkable event, focusing on the local response and the often-overlooked role of women in defending their homeland.</p><h2>The Invasion Begins</h2><p>In the midst of the War of the First Coalition, French General Lazare Hoche devised a three-pronged attack on Britain in support of the Society of United Irishmen. Two forces would land in Britain as a diversionary tactic, while the main force would land in Ireland. Adverse weather and ill-discipline halted two of the forces, but the third, aimed at landing in Wales and marching on Bristol, went ahead. </p><p>On the afternoon of February 22nd, 1797, four French warships, the frigates <em>Vengeance</em> and <em>R&#233;sistance</em> (on her maiden voyage), the corvette <em>Constance</em>, and the lugger <em>Vautour</em>, some of the newest in the French fleet, appeared in Fishguard Bay flying Russian colors to deceive the British. Aboard these vessels were 1,400 troops known as "The Black Legion" due to their use of captured British uniforms dyed black. Under the command of Irish-American Colonel William Tate, a veteran of the American Revolutionary War, this force, officially the Seconde L&#233;gion des Francs, was a mix of 600 regular soldiers and 800 irregulars, including republicans, deserters, convicts, and Royalist prisoners. Many of these men were recently released convicts who had been offered freedom if they joined the invasion. </p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!Z1Dq!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fbacdcb76-b73d-48d1-82ac-ab50314710de_900x691.jpeg" data-component-name="Image2ToDOM"><div class="image2-inset"><picture><source type="image/webp" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!Z1Dq!,w_424,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fbacdcb76-b73d-48d1-82ac-ab50314710de_900x691.jpeg 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!Z1Dq!,w_848,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fbacdcb76-b73d-48d1-82ac-ab50314710de_900x691.jpeg 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!Z1Dq!,w_1272,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fbacdcb76-b73d-48d1-82ac-ab50314710de_900x691.jpeg 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!Z1Dq!,w_1456,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fbacdcb76-b73d-48d1-82ac-ab50314710de_900x691.jpeg 1456w" sizes="100vw"><img src="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!Z1Dq!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fbacdcb76-b73d-48d1-82ac-ab50314710de_900x691.jpeg" width="900" height="691" data-attrs="{&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/bacdcb76-b73d-48d1-82ac-ab50314710de_900x691.jpeg&quot;,&quot;srcNoWatermark&quot;:null,&quot;fullscreen&quot;:null,&quot;imageSize&quot;:null,&quot;height&quot;:691,&quot;width&quot;:900,&quot;resizeWidth&quot;:null,&quot;bytes&quot;:800604,&quot;alt&quot;:null,&quot;title&quot;:null,&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;href&quot;:null,&quot;belowTheFold&quot;:false,&quot;topImage&quot;:false,&quot;internalRedirect&quot;:null,&quot;isProcessing&quot;:false,&quot;align&quot;:null,&quot;offset&quot;:false}" class="sizing-normal" alt="" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!Z1Dq!,w_424,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fbacdcb76-b73d-48d1-82ac-ab50314710de_900x691.jpeg 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!Z1Dq!,w_848,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fbacdcb76-b73d-48d1-82ac-ab50314710de_900x691.jpeg 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!Z1Dq!,w_1272,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fbacdcb76-b73d-48d1-82ac-ab50314710de_900x691.jpeg 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!Z1Dq!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fbacdcb76-b73d-48d1-82ac-ab50314710de_900x691.jpeg 1456w" sizes="100vw"></picture><div class="image-link-expand"><div class="pencraft pc-display-flex pc-gap-8 pc-reset"><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container restack-image"><svg role="img" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 20 20" fill="none" stroke-width="1.5" stroke="var(--color-fg-primary)" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg"><g><title></title><path d="M2.53001 7.81595C3.49179 4.73911 6.43281 2.5 9.91173 2.5C13.1684 2.5 15.9537 4.46214 17.0852 7.23684L17.6179 8.67647M17.6179 8.67647L18.5002 4.26471M17.6179 8.67647L13.6473 6.91176M17.4995 12.1841C16.5378 15.2609 13.5967 17.5 10.1178 17.5C6.86118 17.5 4.07589 15.5379 2.94432 12.7632L2.41165 11.3235M2.41165 11.3235L1.5293 15.7353M2.41165 11.3235L6.38224 13.0882"></path></g></svg></button><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container view-image"><svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 24 24" fill="none" stroke="currentColor" stroke-width="2" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" class="lucide lucide-maximize2 lucide-maximize-2"><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line></svg></button></div></div></div></a><figcaption class="image-caption">French forces landing at Carreg Gwastad on 22 February 1797. However, gunners at the town's poorly-equipped fort fired blanks, dissuading them from entering the harbor. Instead, on a remarkably warm and clear day with a calm sea, they landed at Carregwastad Point, three miles northwest of Fishguard. By 2 a.m. on February 23rd, they had unloaded 17 boatloads of troops, 47 barrels of gunpowder, 50 tons of cartridges and grenades, and 2,000 stands of arms. The invasion had begun.</p>

Originally assigned a district from Holcombe in 1844, the church was consecrated on 23 October 1850. This Gothic Revival building quickly became a central hub for worship and community gatherings. As Walter Mondale&#8217;s running mate, Ferraro's nomination was a groundbreaking moment, challenging the male-dominated political arena and inspiring countless women to engage in politics. The years leading up to this dramatic shift were characterized by the unraveling of the Conservative Party and the strategic transformation of Labour into "New Labour."</p><h2>The Demise of the Conservative Party</h2><p>The Conservative Party's decline began with internal divisions that grew increasingly pronounced over time. Central to these divisions was the contentious issue of Europe. The party was deeply split between Eurosceptics, who vehemently opposed closer ties with the European Union, and pro-European members, leading to incessant infighting and a lack of coherent policy direction. This internal discord eroded the party's unity and effectiveness, making it difficult to present a united front to the electorate.</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!d5Go!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fdf458f3d-7854-4c10-806b-9f4c3a541028_445x267.jpeg" data-component-name="Image2ToDOM"><div class="image2-inset"><picture><source type="image/webp" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!d5Go!,w_424,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fdf458f3d-7854-4c10-806b-9f4c3a541028_445x267.jpeg 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!d5Go!,w_848,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fdf458f3d-7854-4c10-806b-9f4c3a541028_445x267.jpeg 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!d5Go!,w_1272,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fdf458f3d-7854-4c10-806b-9f4c3a541028_445x267.jpeg 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!d5Go!,w_1456,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fdf458f3d-7854-4c10-806b-9f4c3a541028_445x267.jpeg 1456w" sizes="100vw"><img src="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!d5Go!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fdf458f3d-7854-4c10-806b-9f4c3a541028_445x267.jpeg" width="445" height="267" data-attrs="{&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/df458f3d-7854-4c10-806b-9f4c3a541028_445x267.jpeg&quot;,&quot;srcNoWatermark&quot;:null,&quot;fullscreen&quot;:null,&quot;imageSize&quot;:null,&quot;height&quot;:267,&quot;width&quot;:445,&quot;resizeWidth&quot;:null,&quot;bytes&quot;:39641,&quot;alt&quot;:&quot;Black Wednesday Newspapers&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:null,&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;href&quot;:null,&quot;belowTheFold&quot;:false,&quot;topImage&quot;:true,&quot;internalRedirect&quot;:null,&quot;isProcessing&quot;:false,&quot;align&quot;:null,&quot;offset&quot;:false}" class="sizing-normal" alt="Black Wednesday Newspapers" title="Black Wednesday Newspapers" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!d5Go!,w_424,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fdf458f3d-7854-4c10-806b-9f4c3a541028_445x267.jpeg 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!d5Go!,w_848,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fdf458f3d-7854-4c10-806b-9f4c3a541028_445x267.jpeg 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!d5Go!,w_1272,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fdf458f3d-7854-4c10-806b-9f4c3a541028_445x267.jpeg 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!d5Go!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fdf458f3d-7854-4c10-806b-9f4c3a541028_445x267.jpeg 1456w" sizes="100vw" fetchpriority="high"></picture><div class="image-link-expand"><div class="pencraft pc-display-flex pc-gap-8 pc-reset"><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container restack-image"><svg role="img" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 20 20" fill="none" stroke-width="1.5" stroke="var(--color-fg-primary)" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg"><g><title></title><path d="M2.53001 7.81595C3.49179 4.73911 6.43281 2.5 9.91173 2.5C13.1684 2.5 15.9537 4.46214 17.0852 7.23684L17.6179 8.67647M17.6179 8.67647L18.5002 4.26471M17.6179 8.67647L13.6473 6.91176M17.4995 12.1841C16.5378 15.2609 13.5967 17.5 10.1178 17.5C6.86118 17.5 4.07589 15.5379 2.94432 12.7632L2.41165 11.3235M2.41165 11.3235L1.5293 15.7353M2.41165 11.3235L6.38224 13.0882"></path></g></svg></button><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container view-image"><svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 24 24" fill="none" stroke="currentColor" stroke-width="2" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" class="lucide lucide-maximize2 lucide-maximize-2"><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line></svg></button></div></div></div></a><figcaption class="image-caption">Black Wednesday Headlines, including &#8220;Screwed by the Cabinet&#8221;
