At 10.8am on Monday, 21 August 1961, the portrait of Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington by Spanish artist Francisco de Goya, was found to be missing from the National Gallery, Trafalgar Square. Immediately the Metropolitan Police (MET) issued an all ports and airports alert.
