Just as there have been almost countless incarnations of the Doctor in Doctor Who, so there have been several Rose Tyler's of sorts.
We all have our favourite era and our favourite line up of Doctor and companions in Doctor Who. Some look back with nostalgia at the First Doctor, Ian, Barbara, and Susan. Others look to the Third Doctor, Jo Grant, and the then UNIT Regulars. Sill more look to the Fourth Doctor and Sarah Jane Smith, and as for me, the earliest TARDIS line up I recall are the Fifth Doctor, Adric, Nyssa, and Tegan. (Now imagine if Matthew Waterhouse turned up at the end of the latest season of Doctor Who instead of Billie Piper)
But we also have those who look to the Ninth/Tenth Doctor and Rose Tyler and Russell T. Davies likes to dine out on this lineup. It is understandable, it is what he started with. But it has ended with the four "incarnations" of Rose Tyler. Something we have not seen with previous companions.
We have the original Rose, the definite article you might say. The companion who ended up trapped in an alternative Universe with a human copy of the Tenth Doctor.
Then there is the Bad Wolf Rose, a part of Rose that was exposed to the Time Vortex and was like a god, until the Ninth Doctor intervened, causing his regeneration. This has echoes throughout the Doctor/Rose storyline, the Big Bad Wolf who will do anything to save the Doctor.
Which leads to the Moment, the bomb created by the Time Lords, but which has a conscience, seen by the Doctor in the form of Rose Tyler, reminding the Doctor on what needs to be done to save Gallifrey.
And then, finally, we have the new Doctor, or do we? The latest incarnation apparently in the image of Rose Tyler. Jamie, Sarah, Tegan, Ace, Martha, Amy, Clara, and Donna must feel insulted.
But is this the Doctor we are seeing, Billie Piper was not credited as such at the end and if the series is going to be rested for a couple of years, if we have a new showrunner, let me explain what should happen next which will, admittedly, anger some fans, but which may well help the series.
Show this twist at the end as the Moment, intervening to save the Doctor from a forthcoming disaster. The Doctor, with a new face (not Rose Tyler's), is recovering on Earth in the early 20th Century, in a village where it turns out many surviving Time Lords live, protected by the Moment and surviving in a time bubble, reliving each day. It then turns out that the Doctor is not the Timeless Child, but a descendant, and is half human, with his immediate human family living in a nearby city. It not only highlights yet again the Doctor's love of Earth and the question of human origins, but why he usually likes to dress in pseudo edwardian gear. You can also have Susan having called him here so as to help against a dangerous force.
This would skewer the self indulgence of both the Chibnall, and indeed the second RTD era, and bring some neatness back to the series. It would also ensure that the stunt tactic that RTD used in bringing Billie Piper back is properly used.
It does feel a bit like overkill, Rose coming back in one form or another, again and again, but let us utilise it in a way that benefits the series, and that will mean a major reset and we have a strong opportunity for that.
